Summer is Here…Don’t Fall Into the Flip-Flop Trap

Posted on June 16, 2016

Summer is here!! We are so glad that it finally is warm and we can go outside and enjoy the weather. This time of year also brings out a change and sometimes that change is not good. We are talking about the dreaded flip-flop!

While very fashionable, they can also cause undo pain in the legs and low back. Living in flip-flops all summer long can prevent you from enjoying all those outdoor activities you love.

The regular old flip-flop offers virtually no support to your foot and ankle and does not have the cushioning properties of your normal walking shoes. When you walk with flip-flops, you have to subconsciously scrunch your big toe in order to keep them from sliding off. This slight flexing of the big toe puts constant tension on the long arch of your foot, changing your normal walking mechanics.

Over a short period of time, this subtle change can cause a host of pain ranging from foot, Achilles, knee and low back pain.

We are not saying “ditch the flip-flops” but wear them at the beach or around the pool. Just don’t go for long walks on the boardwalk or wear them for long periods of time. Have a good walking shoe to change into if you plan on being on your feet most of the day.

Our Takeaway – Think about what you are putting on your feet. Your body will thank you!
