Karen Kinsey

Karen holds a license to practice Physical Therapy from the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. She also holds Certifications as an Athletic Trainer (ATC), and Orthopedic Manual Specialist (COMT).

Karen holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut’s School of Allied Health Professions in Physical Therapy (1991). Upon graduation, Karen accepted a position with Ed Ayub Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy in Bonita, California. It was here that she developed a solid background in manual therapy – primarily joint mobilization and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). Coupled with a biomechanical approach to treatment, Karen learned to treat the cause of the injury, not just the symptoms, thus creating better outcomes.

In 1993, she left Ed Ayub’s for Sharp’s – Center for Sports Medicine in San Diego – a much larger orthopedic practice whose population included local professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. The same philosophy of biomechanics and manual techniques continued in this high profile sports medicine setting. While in California, Karen completed the athletic training requirements and successfully passed the certification examination in February 1994.

She left the West Coast for Maryland in 1994 to be closer to family and accepted a position at Towson Sports Medicine Center. She spent eight years with TSM until starting Hereford Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine. Karen continued her work in orthopedic physical therapy and athletic training. Here she began doing biomechanical analysis of the lower kinetic chain for proper design, fit and posting of custom foot orthotics. Through Towson Sports Medicine, she had the opportunity to work as an athletic trainer with Loyola College of Maryland, Women’s Toyota Lacrosse Club and local Baltimore County secondary schools.

Karen continues to provide athletic training injury outreach to Hereford High School. During the fall, she can be seen most Friday nights along with her husband, Steve Kinsey (also a Certified Athletic Trainer), on the sidelines for the Hereford Bulls Football Games.

Karen has been working toward her Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist certification through Maitland Austrailian Physiotherapy Seminars and successfully finished her studies, passing her boards in May of 2009. http://www.ozpt.com/COMTgrads.html
