Functional Movement Screening
Hereford Physical Therapy’s Sports Medicine Team is now offering Functional Movement Screenings (FMS) to all of our student athletes and patients. Our primary goal as Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers is to prevent or minimize injuries. The FMS is a great tool to identify kinetic movement patterns that may predispose an athlete to injury.
What is Our Functional Movement Screening Program?
FMS is the screening tool used to identify limitations or asymmetries in seven functional movement patterns assigning a score dependent on how well the movements are completed. These movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic locomotive, manipulative and stabilizing movements by placing an individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable. Limited mobility and strength at any given joint can lead to compensations, altering an individual’s movement pattern placing the athlete at increased risk of injury.
Benefits of an FMS
- The FMS is a consistent and reliable testing method
- Identify abnormal movement patterns and weaknesses
- Identify risk factors to help prevent injuries before they happen
- Provides an enhanced foundation for exercise and performance programming
- Helps you achieve your peak performance
The Functional Movement System is utilized not only in the NFL but most every major professional sport. Several college football programs including Michigan and Notre Dame use all or part of the Functional Movement System. Titlist Performance Institute uses the FMS as part of their program for golf assessment and excellence for amateur and professional golfers. Branches of the United States Military are utilizing the FMS for prevention and treatment of service members.
